About our numbers

Every number on KnowYourPortion comes from USDA FoodData Central (Foundation Foods and SR Legacy), filtered to about 5,000 everyday ingredients.

How we measure a cup

A cup is one level US cup (236.6 ml), filled by spooning and leveling unless the page says to pack it. Tablespoons are 14.8 ml and teaspoons 4.9 ml. Many recipes outside the US use a 250 ml metric cup; every converter has a switch for it.

Raw vs cooked

Cooked yields are for boiling in water and draining. Calories and protein stay the same; only the water weight changes.

How pages are written

Descriptions and tips are drafted with AI help and checked against the USDA record before a page is published. Spanish and French text is machine-translated; anything not yet translated is shown in English. Spot a mistake? Use the correction form at the bottom of any ingredient page.
